How Iowa Corn Is Planted
We plant our Iowa corn and soybeans in April or May and harvest in September or October. Our harvest depends on our growing conditions for our crops - the weather - the river - and if we have to replant due to too much water.
Field Corn vs. Sweet Corn
On our Southeast Iowa family farm, my brother and I plant yellow dent corn each spring using a planter that places the seeds in evenly spaced rows at a consistent depth. Yellow dent corn, also called field corn, is different from the sweet corn people buy at farmers markets or enjoy at summer cookouts. Sweet corn is harvested while the kernels are tender and sweet, while yellow dent corn stays in the field longer to mature and dry. The corn we raise is primarily used to feed livestock or produce ethanol, making Iowa corn an important part of agriculture, renewable energy and our rural Iowa economy.
